6-a-side Competition

Sunday 5th July 2009

Report

The 2nd annual Harlsey 6s had been in doubt in the week running up to it, with variable weather reports cropping up through the week.  However, a bright sunny morning greeted us at the ground, and at around 11am the players began to assemble.

The day’s format would be a 4-team pool, with the top 2 in the pool playing a final to decide the title.  8 overs per innings, 5 bowlers must be used.  2 overs of fielding restrictions, double score zones for straight hit boundaries.  Bonus points awarded in the scoring table for bowling a side out, scoring over 100, or (for batting 2nd only) getting the target within 6 overs.

The first game was an entertaining encounter between Ramma’s Knightriders, led by Andy Ramsbottom, and The Showmen, led by Simon Lea.  The Knightriders decided to field first, a decision that looked dodgy as The Showmen hit 105-2, securing an early bonus point in the process.  This formidable total was not enough though, as Alex ‘Conker/Kerber’ Walls hit 58*, one 6 clearing the pavilion, and 108-3 was reached with an over to spare.  Showmen’s Lea finished with particularly poor figures of 1-46 from his 2 overs.

The second game turned out to be a low-scoring affair, with Chris Ward’s West Harlsey Waratahs bowling out Tommy Breckon’s Yorkshire Tea Bags for just 35 in 4.2 overs. A particular highlight was Richard McGlasham finding the safe hands of his brother Robbie at long off with alarming accuracy.  Sam Gaudie and Chris Holmes, and Haughton import Adam Fenwick saw the Waratah’s 40-2 to secure a double bonus-point victory, and put the Waratah’s at the head of the table after the first round of matches.

There was no rest for the Waratah’s as they went straight back out against The Showmen, this time batting first.  It took until the 7th over, bowled by Walter Burns, to break the opening partnership of Fenwick and Willey.  Fenwick was caught by Haughton teammate Danny Naisbitt for 24, whilst Dave batted throughout for 58* in the final score of 94-1.

The Showmen started their reply positively, Naisbitt and Adam Hodgkinson taking 13 from Robbie McGlasham’s over.  Willey and Gaudie conceded 3 and 4 respectively in the following overs, putting the Waratah’s back in charge.  However, the 5th over, bowled by Gaudie, went for 22, including three 6s from Hodgkinson.  Naisbitt was run out for a useful 22, before Hodgkinson was caught and bowled by Wardy for 30.  20 were needed off the last over, and some (intentional, for once) short-pitched bowling by Wardy prevented any double-scoring hits down the ground, rounding off a 12 run win for his side.

Match 4 Yorkshire Teabags and The Knightrider’s faced each other, and an improved batting display from the Teabags saw them make an impressive 120-1, the Breckon cousins doing most of the work, Tommy striking 58* and Ross 34.  In reply, the Knightrider’s were bowled out for 77, Simon ‘Rocket Arm’ Hill contributing 38, including the day’s first Double 6, straight into the top field.  With 4 of the day’s games down, the Waratah’s topped the table with 2 wins, the Teabag’s and Knightrider’s had one win each, and The Showmen propped up the table with just 1 bonus point from the day so far.

The Knightriders were straight back on to face the Waratahs in match 5, and this proved to be the closest match of the day.  Waratahs scored 93-4, with Robbie McGlasham hitting 63*, the day’s top individual score, and Azza’s figures of 3-12 from 2 overs being the best bowling performance.  The Knightriders were well on top with 42-2 off the first 3.3 overs, before the lingering rain came down more heavily, and play was halted for around half an hour.  When play resumed, things still looked good for the Knightriders, and just 8 were needed off the last over, to be bowled by Wardy.  Some intelligent variations in pace restricted scoring to 6 from the first 5 balls.  With 2 needed from the last ball, Wardy produced a typical full toss, belted into the air by Azza, and caught at long on by Dave to complete a thrilling 1 run victory.

Yorkshire Teabags faced The Showmen in game 6, which would settle who the second place in the final went to.  Teabags batted first, and with PG Tips batting through for 45*, Dave Holmes’ 21, and Richard McGlasham’s 31*, produced the tournament’s highest score, 128-2.  Despite Tommy Burn’s being run out without facing a ball early on, The Showmen’s reply was determined, Adam Hodgkinson scoring 53* batting at 4, but they fell 25 runs short, the Teabags and West Harlsey would contest the final.

Waratah’s batted first, and produced 79-2 in 8 overs, Adam Fenwick top scoring with 29*.  This score looked a little below par in comparison to other scores in the day, due to some good bowling from the Teabags.  Early wickets would be needed, but the Teabag’s looked right on target at 31-1 after 3 overs, despite Richard McGlasham going LBW to Willey for 15.  Sam Gaudie bowled Marshall for 12 in the 4th, but 2 expensive overs followed, some shoddy fielding to blame as much as good batting from Tommy and Ross.  The 7th over was bowled by Willey, costing just 4 runs and claiming 2 wickets, though Greaves’ 1st ball LBW was a little more dubious than that of McGlasham!  Ross was still there though, and held his nerve in the last over to hit the winning 4 with 3 balls remaining, and claim the trophy for the Yorkshire Teabags.

Batsman of the day was given to Robbie McGlasham, bowler of the day to Azza Ramsbottom, and the Most Valuable Player award (the player who was best value for money from the auction) went to Danny Naisbitt.  The spraying of the winner’s Champagne marked the end of an entertaining day.  Thanks must go to everyone who provided barbecues, Les Hill for preparing the pitch, Alex Walls for the use of his speakers and generator, and Simon Lea for providing the megaphone that kept Azza happy for the day (his West-Indian accented comments from the boundary were fantastic!).  Finally, thanks very much to everyone who played, especially those who played when others dropped out, and were contacted at short notice about the day; I hope everyone, players and spectators alike, enjoyed the day.  Here’s to EHCC 6s 2010!
